Daily maintenance points: basic maintenance to keep the water pump in good condition

The key to keeping your water pump in good condition is to incorporate simple but important maintenance tasks into your daily routine and make them a habit. This effectively prevents breakdowns, extends service life and ensures reliable operation when needed. The following are four basic maintenance points throughout the life cycle.

1. “Sensory inspection” in daily use

This is the simplest and most straightforward form of preventive maintenance.

Listen to the sound: Be familiar with the normal and smooth running sound of the water pump. Watch for new friction, banging or squeaking, which is often an early sign of worn bearings or loose components.

Check the operation and water discharge: Observe whether the operation is smooth and without jitter. Check whether the outlet water pressure and flow rate are stable and normal. If there is a significant drop, the cause needs to be investigated.

Touch temperature (pay attention to safety): After a short period of operation, lightly touch the motor shell with the back of your hand. It should feel warm but not hot. Abnormally high temperatures are a sign of overloading, poor cooling, or malfunction.

Check for oil and water leakage: During operation and after shutdown, check the seals and joints of the pump body for leaks.

2. Regular “key point maintenance”

Maintenance items performed on a regular basis (such as weekly, monthly, or every few hundred hours of operation).

Cleaning and inspection:

Clear the pump body and surrounding debris to ensure heat dissipation and ventilation.

Focus on cleaning the water inlet filter or bottom valve to prevent clogging and affecting water absorption.

Lubrication and maintenance:

Strictly follow the instructions and add the appropriate amount and correct type of grease or oil to the designated bearing. This is at the heart of reducing wear and tear.

Check the oil window or oil cup to make sure the oil level is within the normal range.

Tightening check:

Check and tighten key connection parts such as anchor bolts, pipe connecting flanges, coupling bolts, etc. to prevent loosening due to vibration.

Belt inspection (if applicable):

For belt-driven water pumps, check whether the belt tightness is appropriate, whether there is wear or cracks, and adjust or replace it if necessary.

3. “Special maintenance” before seasonal or long-term outage

This is especially important at the end of the irrigation season or before the equipment is idle for an extended period of time.

Completely drain the water: For ground-mounted centrifugal pumps, self-priming pumps, etc., this is a key step to prevent freezing and rust! Be sure to open the drain plug at the bottom of the pump body and the lowest part of the pipe to drain out all water.

Comprehensive cleaning: Completely remove dirt and scale inside and outside.

Protection of key components: Apply anti-rust grease to exposed metal processing surfaces (such as shaft extensions and unpainted parts).

Proper storage: Move the water pump to a dry, ventilated, and rain-proof room for storage. Coil the cables to prevent rats from biting them.

4. Establish maintenance records and awareness

Simple records: Prepare a notebook to record the date, items and problems found for each maintenance. This helps track equipment status and schedule preventive maintenance.

Preparation of spare parts: Always keep wearing parts, such as seals, belts, bearings, fuses, etc., in case of urgent need.

Seek help for professional issues: For complex internal faults (such as motor burnout, pump shaft bending, severe cavitation damage), you should contact professionals for repair, and do not blindly dismantle it yourself.

To sum up, the basic maintenance of water pumps can be summarized as follows: pay more attention to it every day (listen, see, touch), do key things regularly (clean, tighten, moisturize), handle it before stopping (drain, clean, prevent), and have good recording habits. By consistently following these points, your pump will stay healthy and become a long-lasting, reliable partner in your irrigation operations. Remember, an extra minute spent on maintenance can save hours in the event of a breakdown.
